Adenovirus
Rotavirus and adenovirus are the leading causes of viral enteritis
Adenovirus
- Infects lining of eyes, airways, lungs, intestines, urinary tract, and nervous system
- Common cause of fever, cough, sore throat, diarrhea, pink eye
- More common in children than adults; most kids have had one infection by age 10
- Usually mild, self-resolving in a few days
- Can be more serious in people with weak immune systems, especially children

Adenovirus
- Respiratory droplets — most common; causes pharyngitis and pneumonia
- Faecal-oral route — causes gastroenteritis
- Direct contact and fomites — causes conjunctivitis
- Waterborne — swimming pools; epidemic keratoconjunctivitis
- Blood or organ transplant — in immunocompromised patients

What our notes say
- Rotavirus and adenovirus are the leading causes of viral enteritis (Paediatrics end of 2nd semester exam (MBPE 4300): 5 October 2021, 50 MCQs)
- Causes: mostly viruses (rhinovirus, influenza, parainfluenza, RSV, coronavirus, adenovirus). (Bronchitis (Acute and Chronic))
- | Post-infectious (commonest, especially in Kenya) | Tuberculosis, severe pneumonia, measles, whooping cough, adenovirus | (Bronchiectasis)
- Differential includes group A strep, EBV, adenovirus, diphtheria. (Bacteriology and Entomology Supplementary Exam)
- Completely ineffective against adenovirus (the actual likely cause here) (Pharmacology Cheat Code)
