Bacillary Angiomatosis
It details various vascular ectasias, distinguishes between benign and malignant vascular tumours, and explores intermediate forms like Kaposi Sarcoma and Bacillary Angiomatosis.
Bacillary Angiomatosis
- Bartonella henselae — transmitted by cat scratch or bite → cat-scratch disease in immunocompetent hosts (necrotising granulomatous lymphadenopathy)
- Bartonella quintana — transmitted by body louse → trench fever in WWI; causes bacillary angiomatosis in AIDS patients
- Bacillary angiomatosis: exclusively in immunocompromised hosts (AIDS, transplant recipients)
- Bartonella infects endothelial cells → triggers HIF-1α → VEGF upregulation → vascular proliferation
- HIF-1α activation is the key molecular mechanism explaining the vascular proliferative response.

Bacillary Angiomatosis
- Vascular proliferation in immunocompromised hosts (especially AIDS patients )
- Caused by opportunistic bacilli of the Bartonella family
- Bartonella henselae — reservoir = domestic cat; causes cat-scratch disease (necrotising granulomatous lymphadenopathy) in immunocompetent hosts
- Bartonella quintana — transmitted by human body lice; caused trench fever in World War I
- Lesions involve skin, bone, brain, and other organs
