Cardiovascular Pathology
Topic: Case-Based — Cardiovascular Pathology & Biomarkers
CARDIOVASCULAR PATHOLOGY
- Pathogenesis (response-to-injury):
- Chronic endothelial injury (HTN, smoking, hyperlipidaemia, hyperglycaemia, turbulent flow at branch points)
- Injured endothelium → permeable to LDL → LDL enters intima, oxidizes
- Oxidized LDL attracts monocytes → become macrophages → engulf lipid → foam cells
- Foam cell accumulation = fatty streak (earliest lesion)
