Mitral Stenosis
Also written as MS.
The left ventricle is typically protected from overload in pure mitral stenosis.
Mitral Stenosis
- cause: Rheumatic heart disease
- Obstruction of LV filling → LA enlargement → pulmonary HTN
- Signs: Opening snap + mid-diastolic rumble at apex
- Complications: AF, pulmonary HTN, hemoptysis, systemic emboli

What our notes say
- The left ventricle is typically protected from overload in pure mitral stenosis. (Cardiology Question Bank: 15 Clinical MCQs)
- Diastolic murmurs are never normal in pregnancy: investigate them (rheumatic mitral stenosis becomes dangerous in pregnancy because the heart rate and volume load rise). (Physiological changes in pregnancy)
- • Is of considerable diagnostic valve in certain forms of heart disease e.g. mitral stenosis and pulmonary arterial hypertension (Cardiovascular system examination revised 2012 — Past Paper Questions & Answers)
- • Is of considerable diagnostic value in certain forms of heart disease. e.g. mitral stenosis, pulmonary arterial hypertension (Examination of Respiratory system — Past Paper Questions & Answers)
- The left atrium enlarges and fibrillates, and stasis leads to thrombus and systemic emboli, so these patients need anticoagulation (warfarin in rheumatic mitral stenosis with atrial fibrillation). (Cardiology Question Bank: 15 Clinical MCQs)
- Roll the patient to the left lateral position and use the bell to hear the mid-diastolic rumble of mitral stenosis. (Heart murmurs)
