Thyroid Peroxidase
Also written as TPO.
Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is a critical enzyme that catalyzes two essential steps in thyroid hormone synthesis:Iodination (Organification): TPO mediates the addition of iodine to the tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, forming monoiodotyrosine (MIT) and diiodotyrosine (DIT).
What our notes say
- Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is a critical enzyme that catalyzes two essential steps in thyroid hormone synthesis:Iodination (Organification): TPO mediates the addition of iodine to the tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin, forming monoiodotyrosine (MIT) and diiodotyrosine (DIT). (LECTURE 4: Thyroid Hormones)
- This binding activates multiple pathways to stimulate thyroid hormone production:Increases synthesis of the iodine transporter, thyroid peroxidase, and thyroglobulin, all of which are essential for thyroid hormone synthesis. (LECTURE 4: Thyroid Hormones)
- Thyroid peroxidase is an enzyme that catalyzes the iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the coupling of iodotyrosines to form T3 and T4. (Thyroid Hormone)
- Iodide is oxidized to iodine by thyroid peroxidase (TPO), and this iodine binds to tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin, forming MIT and DIT, which are then coupled to produce T3 and T4. (Thyroid Hormone)
- Anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies to confirm autoimmune thyroiditis. (Integrated case paper: Medicine, Surgery, Gynaecology and Paediatrics (160 marks)
- Tests: TSH (raised) and free T4 (low); anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies; full blood count (anaemia), lipids (high cholesterol), creatine kinase, sodium and glucose; ECG. (Internal Medicine (MBIM 4100) main exam, Paper One: 3 July 2019)
