Typhoid Fever
This is particularly important in typhoid fever transmission.
Typhoid Fever (Enteric Fever)
- Caused by Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi
- Transmission: ingestion of food/water contaminated by human faeces
- Bacteria taken up by M cells over Peyer patches → invade lymphoid follicles
- Reaches mesenteric lymph nodes → thoracic duct → bloodstream (primary bacteraemia)
- Disseminates to liver, spleen, bone marrow, gallbladder
