Testicular Torsion
Testicular torsion is a urologic emergency caused by twisting of the spermatic cord, requiring prompt surgical intervention to prevent venous infarction.
Testicular Torsion
- Twisting of spermatic cord → venous obstruction → venous infarction
- Arteries remain patent (thicker walls)
- Urologic emergency — viable if corrected within 6 hours
- Contralateral testis fixed surgically (orchiopexy) to prevent future torsion

Testicular Torsion (×2)
- Testis with attached spermatic cord
- Haemorrhagic infarction secondary to testicular torsion
- Q: What is testicular torsion?
- Twisting of the spermatic cord
- Obstructs venous outflow first, then arterial compromise

Practice questions on Testicular Torsion
The following are true of testicular torsion
- Mainly cuts off the arterial blood supply
- Venous engorgement leads to hemorrhagic infarction
- Orchidopexy is the only form of treatment
- Mainly presents in teenage years with sudden onset testicular pain
- All the above ✅ Answer: E
Answer: A. Testicular torsion involves twisting of the spermatic cord, leading to venous outflow obstruction and subsequent hemorrhagic infarction, often presenting in teenagers with acute pain, and requiring surgical correction (orchidopexy).
