Uterine Leiomyoma
Definition: Uterine leiomyomas (fibroids) are benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus, representing the most common gynecologic tumor.
Uterine Leiomyomas (Fibroids) (×2)
- Bisected uterus with multiple well-circumscribed whorled whitish nodular masses
- Uterine leiomyomata (fibroids) — most common benign smooth muscle tumour of the uterus
- Multiple well-circumscribed rounded nodules within myometrium
- Whorled, white-tan cut surface
- Clear demarcation from surrounding myometrium (pseudocapsule)

UTERINE LEIOMYOMA (FIBROIDS)
- Well-circumscribed, whorled, white, firm masses arising from myometrial smooth muscle
- Classified by location: submucosal, intramural, subserosal
- Oestrogen-dependent — grow during reproductive years, regress after menopause
- degenerative changes leiomyomas can undergo:
- Hyaline degeneration — most common type
