Gastric Adenocarcinoma
It is implicated in the genesis of both gastric adenocarcinomas and gastric lymphomas
Gastric Adenocarcinoma
- Who : More common in lower socioeconomic groups; marked geographic variation
- Aetiology : H. pylori (most common), chronic atrophic gastritis, EBV infection → multiple pathways of neoplastic transformation
- Two Major Histologic Types
- Linitis Plastica : "leather bottle stomach" — diffuse signet ring cell infiltration thickens entire gastric wall without forming a discrete mass
- Classification : Based on location + gross + histologic morphology

Gastric Adenocarcinoma
- The incidence of gastric adenocarcinoma varies markedly with geography and is more common in lower socioeconomic groups. H. pylori infection is the most common aetiologic agent. Other associations include chronic atrophic gastritis and EBV
- Clinical Features: These include abdominal swelling, abdominal pain, vomiting, and gastric outlet obstruction.

Gastric Adenocarcinoma
- Aetiology: H. pylori (most common), chronic atrophic gastritis, EBV infection.
- Intestinal Type: Bulky, discrete, gland-forming cells.
- Diffuse Type: Signet ring cells; diffuse infiltration leading to Linitis Plastica ("leather bottle stomach").

What our notes say
- It is implicated in the genesis of both gastric adenocarcinomas and gastric lymphomas (Oncopathology MCQs: Test Your Knowledge on Cancer Pathology)
- Gastric Adenocarcinoma: This has highly variable incidence worldwide; H. pylori is the most common etiologic agent. (GASTROINTESTINAL PATHOLOGY (Part 1))
- It is associated with PUD, gastric adenocarcinoma, and MALT lymphoma. (GASTROINTESTINAL PATHOLOGY (Part 1))
- Gastric Adenocarcinoma (Diffuse Type): Characterized by signet ring cells, diffuse infiltration, and can lead to "Linitis Plastica" (leather bottle stomach). (Gastropathology Pathology)
- A patient with diffuse thickening of the gastric wall, described as "linitis plastica," is diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma. (Gastrointestinal Neoplasms: High-Yield Exam Review)
- Complications: peptic ulcer disease, MALT lymphoma (chronic antigenic stimulation of mucosal lymphoid tissue), intestinal metaplasia → increased gastric adenocarcinoma risk (Ovarian & Colorectal Cancer: Risks, Pathogenesis, Staging)
